The Western Balkans Circular Economy Week is an annual initiative of the LogEx community and the Balkan Forum, organised in the last week of May, with the aim of raising awareness of circular economy principles and promoting innovative and sustainable practices across the region. As part of the 2024 edition, the Media Literacy Workshop: Reporting on the Circular Economy engages journalists, journalism students, and environmental advocacy experts in Bosnia and Herzegovina to strengthen their understanding of circular economy concepts and enhance their capacity for responsible and impactful reporting.

The initiative is designed as a comprehensive learning and engagement process that combines targeted outreach, capacity building, and post-workshop knowledge dissemination. In advance of the workshop, a dedicated promotional campaign is implemented to engage relevant media professionals and future journalists, ensuring diverse participation and strong visibility of circular economy topics within the media community. The preparatory phase also includes the development of tailored training materials and a Circular Economy Guidebook for Media Professionals, providing participants with long-term resources for reporting on circular economy and sustainability-related issues.

The one-day interactive workshop brings together approximately 20 participants and focuses on strengthening their understanding of the circular economy, its benefits, and its role in supporting resilient and inclusive economic development while addressing sustainability and climate challenges. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of media in shaping public perception and translating complex technical concepts into clear, accurate, and engaging stories. Through facilitated discussions and a practical exercise titled “Writing for Sustainability: Creating Stories on the Circular Economy”, participants apply newly acquired knowledge by developing their own articles on circular economy topics.

Following the workshop, the initiative continues through the promotion of participant-produced content, amplifying key messages beyond the event itself. Selected articles are shared through online channels, including the project website and social media, contributing to wider public awareness and reinforcing the role of informed, solutions-oriented journalism in supporting the circular economy transition in the Western Balkans. Through this integrated approach, the project strengthens media capacities while fostering sustained engagement with circular economy narratives across the region.
